Overcoming Suicidal Thoughts

Updated: Oct 8, 2024

Many people have experienced suicidal thoughts. It is a dark time and, although the lonely feeling is overwhelming at this very low point, it is important to know that there are others who also struggle. Thoughts of suicide take different forms, and it may seem almost impossible to reach out for support or to stop thinking these thoughts.

Take things little by little. Try not to fixate on the days ahead but rather, focus on the next minute and then the next five minutes. Positive distractions can help to temporarily set the pain aside until it can be properly addressed. Do something that offers comfort and can lift the mood such as spending time with family and friends, working on a hobby, watching or listening to something funny, taking a walk, playing with a pet, or going on a short excursion.

It is critical to talk to someone. Share with trusted family and friends and ask for their support. If opening up to a loved one is too difficult, crisis hotlines can help by providing a safe space to speak with trained counselors by telephone or text message. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available by telephone at (800) 273-8255. The Crisis Text Line is available by texting HOME to 741741. While it can be difficult, sharing thoughts and feelings can often bring relief. No matter how unbearable things may feel now, no feeling lasts forever; each day is an opportunity for feelings to change.
