Burial in a VA National Cemetery

Planning for the future is not always easy. For veterans and their families, it is one of the most meaningful acts of care and foresight we can take. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers burial in a VA National Cemetery as one of the highest honors for those who served our nation. Yet, many families are unaware that they can apply now, long before the time of need, to ensure eligibility and peace of mind through the Pre-Need Eligibility Determination Program.

Eligible veterans, service members, and some family members may receive:

  • Burial at no cost in any open VA National Cemetery

  • A government-furnished headstone, marker, or niche cover

  • Perpetual care of the gravesite

  • A burial flag to honor the veteran’s service

  • A Presidential Memorial Certificate, signed by the President

  • Military funeral honors, if requested

Family members may also qualify for burial alongside their veteran, ensuring they rest together in a dignified and permanently maintained setting.

The Pre-Need Eligibility Determination Program allows veterans and their families to apply in advance to confirm eligibility for burial in a VA National Cemetery. Once approved, the VA will send an official eligibility letter confirming the entitlement. This letter remains valid for life, unless military records change.

This proactive step eliminates uncertainty, reduces stress on loved ones, and ensures that your service and wishes are honored without delay or confusion during a difficult time. It can also

Reduce Burden on Family Members

In times of loss, your family should not have to search for discharge papers or worry about eligibility requirements. Pre-approval ensures everything is already in place, allowing your family to focus on remembrance rather than paperwork.

Secure Your Resting Place

Not all VA cemeteries have unlimited space. Applying early lets you express cemetery preference and helps ensure your chosen location is available when the time comes.

Guarantee Accurate Records

Applying now means your DD214 or discharge documentation can be reviewed for accuracy. If corrections are needed, they can be handled well before they might cause delays later.

No Cost and No Obligation

There is no cost to apply for pre-need eligibility, and approval does not obligate you or your family to use the benefit. It simply secures your right to do so.

Application for this benefit may be done in one of three ways:
