Veterans who receive higher-level benefits like Special Monthly Compensation (SMC), pension benefits, Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grants, and those awarded the Purple Heart are being specifically targeted by scammers looking to take advantage of the increased compensation and the public visibility of these honors.
What Scammers Are Doing
Bad actors use a range of tactics designed to deceive and exploit veterans
▪ Identity theft and fraud schemes – Tricking veterans into revealing personal information
▪ Fake financial services – Charging unnecessary fees for services the VA provides free of charge
▪ Pressure-driven pitches to transfer or alter finances – Scams where unnecessary financial changes are encouraged to qualify for benefits (pension poaching)
How To Stay Safe
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs stresses that protecting your personal and benefit information is key.
▪ Guard Login Info – Never share username, password, or security answers, even family members or people helping with benefits
▪ Use Your Own Account for Deposits – Benefit payments should go into a bank account that is in your name and that you can access
▪ Check with VA Directly – If something seems off, such as unexpected changes or strange inquiries about your benefits, contact the VA right away at (800) 827-1000
▪ Report Suspected Scams – Suspected fraud or suspicious activity can be filed with VSAFE.gov or by calling 833-38V-SAFE
Extra Caution for Housing Grants
Scammers sometimes pose as contractors to charge upfront money and then disappear.
▪ Get multiple bids and check references
▪ Verify licenses and permits before work begins
▪ Carefully read contracts and never sign incomplete forms
Scams aimed at veterans are unfortunately common. Awareness and vigilance can make all the difference. Stay informed and report suspicious activity to help protect hard-earned benefits.
