Military installations offer an array of on-base resources to support families and caregivers through everything from daily life to crisis management. Whether new to the lifestyle or a seasoned military spouse, these ten on-base resources can be a lifeline.
Family Support Centers
The installation’s family center (Army: ACS, Navy: FFSC, Air Force: A&FRC, Marines: MCFTB) is a go-to for everything from relocation assistance and financial readiness to deployment support and resume workshops. They are staffed with professionals who understand military life and can connect you with local and national programs.
Child Development Centers (CDC)
These on-base childcare facilities provide affordable, accredited care for infants through school-age children. They offer full-day, part-day, and hourly care, allowing caregivers and working spouses peace of mind while balancing their responsibilities.
Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) Office
Families with members who have special medical or educational needs can turn to the EFMP coordinator for individualized support. Services include IEP navigation, respite care referrals, and help ensuring that PCS orders align with the family’s unique requirements.
Base Medical Clinic and TRICARE Services
Most installations have on-base medical facilities that provide primary care, immunizations, mental health support, and referrals to specialists. The TRICARE representative onsite can help families enroll, change providers, and navigate military healthcare.
Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLCs)
MFLCs offer confidential, short-term, non-medical counseling for service members and families - no records, no stigma. They are located throughout base schools, youth centers, and family centers, and can help with parenting challenges, deployment stress, and relationship support.
Commissary and Exchange (PX/NEX/BX/MCX)
The on-base grocery store and retail exchange offer tax-free shopping with discounts that help families stretch their budgets. Many installations also have gas stations, barbershops, optical centers, and uniform shops.
Base Chapel and Religious Services
Beyond faith-based support, most base chapels provide family counseling, parenting classes, holiday assistance, and youth programs. Chaplains also offer confidential support regardless of religious affiliation.
Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR)
MWR offers low-cost or free entertainment, fitness, and recreation programs for families. This includes gyms, bowling alleys, swimming pools, movie theaters, and family trips. It’s also a key source for community events and classes like yoga, cooking, or art.
Legal Assistance Office
Military families can access free legal help on base for things like wills, power of attorney, SCRA protections, landlord disputes, and custody matters. This is especially useful before deployments or major life events.
Armed Services YMCA or USO
These organizations often operate directly on or near installations, offering free programs like parent-and-child playgroups, back-to-school supplies, emergency assistance, and respite events for caregivers.
Military life is challenging and does not have to be navigated alone. Every installation is built with the mission of supporting not just service members, but the families who serve beside them. Make it a priority to walk into your local Family Support Center and explore what your base has to offer.
