Military Formal 101: Etiquette

Military formals can be intimidating. Service members have protocols that need to be followed during military balls. Guests accompanying a service member represents that serve member and are expected to act in a manner that is respectful. Follow these basic etiquette tips, relax, and have fun!

• Do not overdo cocktail hour.

• When Colors are presented, stand and face the flag. Place your right hand over your heart.

• Refer to others the same way that they introduce themselves.

• During dinner, the napkin is placed on the lap and elbows are kept off the table.

• Maintain proper decorum.

• Be polite.
